The place I always eat:
Pizza East - It’s rare to find a DUMBO vibe in London. Housed in the TEA Building, it used to be a rave venue; now it serves rustic Italian food. I go almost every Monday when its 50% off and Meatball Tuesdays is…discount meatballs, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Where to stay for the night:
Dean Street Townhouse in Soho or The Fox and Anchor in Clerkenwell
The one place I take everyone:
The Palm Tree Pub in Mile End. Signed pictures of celebrity drinkers (think Jim Bowen, the darts guy). Proper East End boozer complete with jazz bands, crooners and an old lady with an amazing voice.
Best local product you should try:
Urban Bees honey (made from hives on London rooftops). The honey is sold in A.Gold in Spitalfields or online (but only in summer).
The 2nd best kept secret:
If you don’t live by it you forget about Regent’s Canal which runs a good length of the city and passes by key areas like London Fields and Islington. A lot of warehouse apartments have been built and where it was pretty derelict, now there are pop up-shops along the trail as well as a cute coffee place called The Towpath with a floating pontoon that folk bands play on in summer. I like the idea that it existed alongside the city for all that time, kind of dormant, like ‘edgeland’, reflecting its development.
