Over the last 4 years I’ve been spending less and less time there but SP I still think it is my own Gothan City. I’ve lived for ten years and it took me half of it to actually now it.
The place I always eat:
My favourite eating spot is Almanara, a lebanease restaurant in the city old centre, by the Praça da Republica. The deco is pure cool Brazil meets middle east delight, wooden walls, desert paintings, palm trees. The waiters, all above 50, are dressed like they work in a five stars restaurant and the food is divine. Just go for the tasting (all you can eat) menu and a pineapple and mint juice eyes closed.
Where to stay for the night:
I love Unique for its architecture boldness and the swimming pool at the roof top. In Rio avoid Copacabana. Its mythical, and great to have a drink in the afternoon but unless you are at the presidential suite it feels like a bad holiday inn.
The one place I take everyone:
The Terraço Italia is a magical place, and a cliché at the same time. At the 35 floor of a downtown building it have the best view of the city. It is cool because its like a 70’s piano bar, with good cocktails, and perfect to make foreigners understand what we mean by a urban chaos.
Best local product you should try:
Pão de queijo (something like a cheese bread, but way better that what you have in mind right now). At Casa do pao de queijo at rua haddock lobo they have the best one in my humble opinion.
The 2nd best kept secret:
Yamaga is an authentic japanese restaurant in the heart of Liberdade, run by a japanease couple. Un unpretentious and friendly atmosphere, great food, reasonable price. What else do you want?
