Alex- Musician - Half Moon Bay, California
The place I always eat:I live in New York now, a town devoid of taquerias, so when I’m home I have tacos al pastor at Happy Tacos or a carnitas super burrito at Tres Amigos. Tres has degraded over the years a bit but it’s still above and beyond anything NYC has to offer.
Where to stay for the night:I grew up south of town and naturally prefer to stay down there, out on the coast. If one plans ahead, reservations can be made at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse hostel. I’ve stopped there on my way back from Santa Cruz twice now due to whale spottings from Highway 1.
The one place I take everyone:Martins Beach. 6 miles south of Half Moon Bay, this is the beach where I was raised. Its the most beautiful in the world as far as I’m concerned. My parents still live at Martins and I’ve been attempting a monthly pilgrimage from Brooklyn for three years now.Best local product you should try:I grew up eating directly from the sea. My father was/is an avid fisherman, diver and forager so I suppose the local fruit of the sea is not to be missed. There’s been a ban on diving for abalone for 16 years now but mussels, clams, crab and fish are still abundant.
Artichokes grow locally as well. Great combo. The 2nd best kept secret:

Marrtins Beach is the first. The second may be Pebble Beach, just south of Pescadero. No, not the golf course near Monterrey, Pebble Beach is a beautiful miniature cove 20 or 30 feet beneath the cliff that is composed almost entirely of smooth, colorful pebbles. Every handful displays thousands of gorgeous hues and polished shape.
