Nicolette - Globe Trotter - Kampala, Uganda, EAST AFRICA
The place I always eat:
The best way to understand a country is through its food, in Kampala I frequented the Nomo Art Gallery , weekdays consisted of extravagant authentic Uganda buffet located in city center convenient for the hustle and bustle of the middle class white collars to get a bite. I would go there for lunch dates with friends and feast like Kings. As a Vegan I will describe the bountiful vegan options, a plate will consist of pinto beans, fresh steamed vegetables, skumawiki (spinanch), pumpkin, sweet potato, vegetable pilau (basamatic rice with veggies i.e. peas and carrots), Matoke (classic Uganda staple starch, mashed plantain) and chapatti bread with chilis on the side. Mmmm…YUM. A blend of African and Indian food describes Uganda in a nutshell.
Where to stay for the night:
Hotel Bougainviller, I have stayed and recommended many of my friends to stay at this exquisitely done boutique hotel located in my neighborhood of Bugolobi far from the hustle of city center, Run by a Belgian man and his daughter, it is tastefully done and low key.
The one place I take everyone:
Kitintale Skate Park, the first and I believe the only skate park in east Africa. Kitintale skate park is a project close to my heart, my sister and I along with friend Andy Stepanian of shac 7 have brought over a grand worth of skate gear donations to the awesome kids of kitintale park and continue to help oversee the wellbeing of the kids and the park.
Best local product you should try:
the PINEAPPLES. SUPERB.
The 2nd best kept secret:
my backyard, full of tree and blossoming flowers and butterflies I spent many a lazy Sunday soaking in the beauty and wonder of Africa.
